Beagle Riddle

A shopkeeper says she has two new beagle puppies to offer you, but she doesn’t know whether they’re male, female, or a pair because they’re still at the kennel where they were whelped. You tell her that you want a male, and she telephones the fellow who’s giving them a bath. “Is the one you’re bathing a male?” she asks him. “Yes!” she informs you with a smile. Now we know you can have a male puppy, but what is the probability that the other one is a male?

The probability of the second puppy being a male is 50%. Unless otherwise explicitly stated, the second puppy is practically completely independent of the first. Hence, the odds do not change. It is 50%.

  2. I believe the odds of the second beagle being a male is a 50/50 chance. knowing the first beagle is a male leaves you with only two options, female and male.

I think it will be a 50% chance because we already know that one puppy is a male.

The probability that the other puppy is male would still end up being 50/50 because there are only 2 types you can chose from.

I think the answer to the riddle is 50% because there are two probabilities that remain.

With the one beagle already male, the chances are 50/50 because the other one of the two puppies could be either male or female.

The probability is 50/50 because out of the 2 possible options there can only be 2 males one time.

The probability the other puppy is male is 50% because the only possibilities left if the first puppy is male are if the second is male or the second is female. Since the second puppy can only be one or the other, it is a 50% chance.

The likelihood is 50/50 because the first beagle is male and the second beagle can only be male or female leaving two options with even possibility for each.

The probability that the other one is a male is 50% because given that the first one is a male, the second one can either be a male or female which equals a 50% chance the second one is a male.

  24. The odds of any puppy chosen being male or female is a 50/50 chance because there are only two puppies all together and only one more to choose from, which could be either male or female.

The probability of the gender of the other puppy being male is 1/2. The options for the gender of the puppy are either F or M. To have a male puppy, the chance is 1/2. At least that’s the way I see it.

The probability that the other is a male is 1/3 because of there were 4 and one was taken out it makes 1/3 of it left

I believe that there is a 50 percent chance of the other beagle being a male. Since the odds of any puppy being male or female is 50 percent and 50 percent respectively, the chance of the puppy in this scenario being a male is 50 percent as well. The first puppy being a male doesn’t change the odds for the other one being male or female as the two are independent of each other.

  27. There are four possibilities in this instance. Two of them being that the first one is a male. In turn that means there is a 50% chance the other one is a female.

My assumption that the odds of the other Beagle would be male is 50% because when we ruled out all the possibilities that could happen when having the puppy the probability of both dogs being male was 25% however two probabilities were ruled out leaving the probability to be 50%.

  30. The chances of the puppy being male is still 50% because it does not matter what the first one is to determine the second puppy’s gender. There may now be a higher chance of it being female because a male was already taken out of the puppy’s population, however, there should still be close to a 50/50 odd.

The probability that the other puppy is male is 1/2. There are two possibilities for the gender of the puppy. It could be a male or a female. So the probability is 1/2.
