The current problems affecting Vancouver are linked to the criminal actions of heroin addicts to support their habits. The “free heroin for addicts” program is doing everything they can to stop this behavior. Addicts have a difficult time getting through their day to day lives. Daily activities such as jobs, interactions, and relationships are hard to maintain due to the effects of using. Addiction also causes them to go to great lengths to get their hands on the drug. This would include breaking and entering as well as stealing. The immense problem with the heroin addicts program is that it will not help to ween them off of the drug. It ultimately only saves the city from rising crime rates. Providing the drug keeps the addicts off the streets, which in turn will prevent them from committing minor street crimes. This will also keep the heroin users out of the hospital. Normally, hospitals have to deal with addicts’ habits such as overdosing or using unsanitary needles. Many times they find themselves being unable to afford the expensive hospital bills and hard to cope without the drug. Overall, this program provides these people with free heroin in the cleanest way possible, but the end result will only fix the city’s crime rates instead of the life altering addiction that these people face.
