In Vancouver, the link between heroin addicts and crime is a problem which is rising to the forefront. The “free heroin for addicts” program is doing everything they can to put an end to this trend. It is clear from an outside perspective that addicts have a hard time getting through their day to day lives. Daily activities such as jobs, social interactions, and relationships are hard to maintain because of the fact that they are using and struggling with addiction. Being addicted, heroin users will do whatever it takes to get the drug and satisfy their need. Crimes committed include breaking and entering and stealing. The problem with this program, however, is that it won’t help to stop heroin addiction. It is only trying to save the city from rising crime rates, which is not the true problem. By providing the drug, these addicts will be off the streets, which will prevent them from committing these crimes. This will also keep the heroin users out of the hospital, where they may not be able to pay for the bill. This program gives people free heroin in the cleanest way possible. This will subsequently fix the city’s crime rate, but not the addiction that these people face.
