Reflective – ahntkd99

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

When this semester just started, I was a beginner in writing. After immigrating to the United States, I’ve never wrote an essay in English class except for Science and History class in US high school. Since Korean education rarely writes essays until high school, this was the actually first class that I could write professionally. As expected, Letter to the Editor was a complete failure. I didn’t understand and find the concept. Also, I didn’t find and write any clear evidences. So, I requested feedback from the Professor Hodge, and he explained and gave me advice. After that, I tried to fixe and made clearly about my idea and tried to understand the concept again. Write the essay was difficult but I felt that my writing skills were improving.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

People who can read critically, also knows how to write critically. For to write Editorial critically, I read a variety of editorials written by others. I also tried to look at the other students Editorial critically. The assignment that I tried to write critically was Editorial. For writing Editorial, I was looking for interesting topic. For finding interesting topic, I read lots of variety topics. During I found the topic, I read the articles about youth alcohol problem. It is a problem of similar to my age, I could easily understand it and I thought if I write essay about this topic, then many teenagers can realize how the alcohol problem is serious. Thus, I wrote an Editorial about the youth alcohol problem. Not only wrote the problem, I also let them know how to reduce the teen’s alcohol problem.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

Op-Eds are worth studying because they show persuasive and responsive to the writing of other authors. I read many Op-Eds to get my opinion. After I decided a topic, I read many articles related to my topic and tried to settle my opinion. My Op-Ed is written for the purpose of the audience, so that, it can be easily understood by many people. Climate change was an issue that most people could related to our real lives easily. I tried to say that the issue of climate change is intimately related to our lives by explaining not only how climate change solves the problem, but also by explaining the impact of rapid climate change on our lives. Through my Op-Ed writing, I hoped that readers more attention the climate change.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

Citing a source is a good way to support your opinion of the article realistically. During this semester, I used a lot of other sources to support my opinion more clearly when I am writing essays. I searched the surveys and statistics related to the topic. The best example of the assignment is Letter to the Editor. I used statistics to highlight how the drug is bad and how serious it to our lives. I also tried to let them recognized this is a realistic and common problem in our real world. Not only the adults, I wrote about the babies. Even though the drug is bad to people, it gives the worst effect to babies. I used the interview of doctors and people who care the babies in the hospital. The interview made the evidence strongly.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

It is very important to cite sources in a fair and appropriate way. Some authors often cite sources in unethical way to provide evidence for their writing. If you cite a source in an unethical way, the readers can confuse the concepts. When I wrote the Op-Ed, I searched and reviewed a lot of material to cite the sources for use the citation ethically. Also, I wanted to support strong evidences, so, I searched the exact examples about the climate change. A representative example is the loss of ice in Greenland. I used the one of the examples of land because it can happen even in lands close to where we live. In addition, I wrote how the sea level was changed to alert to warning people.
