Riddle: The Soccer Penalty Kick

penalty kick

What’s the smartest kick?
To the shooter’s strong side, which the goalie is more likely to guard?
Or to the shooter’s weak side, which the goalie is more likely to block if he guesses right?

The authors of Think Like a Freak give us some details to help us decide.

  • The goal is 12 yards away.
  • It’s 8 yards wide and 8 feet tall.
  • You will kick the ball at 80 miles per hour.
  • The kick will arrive at the net in 0.306818 seconds
  • The goalie can’t wait for you to kick. He has to guess and fling his body toward his choice before you make contact with the ball.
  • Overall, at the elite level, 75% of penalty kicks are successful.
  • If he chooses wrong, your odds of success are about 90%.
  • You want him to choose wrong.
  • Whether you’re left- or right-footed, 57% of goalies will guard your strong side. 41% of the time, they’ll guard your weak side.

Answer in the Reply field below and Post Comment:

  1. What’s the best way to improve your odds of kicking the ball where the goalie isn’t?
  2. Why do so few kickers make the most logical choice?

    – OP-EDs often contain a byline, a feature not shared with editorials
-OP-EDs also include loaded language, imperatives, and judgement.
    – Facial recognition is a emerging technology that has the potential to be abused and has already been used in some parts of the world such as China to monitor minority groups.

We spent our class time going over different articles and videos about facial recognition. The video Op-Eds have a short two paragraph summary about what is in the video. We also went over how companies can purchase thousands of pictures of peoples faces to use for your own software. We also went over a company that attempted to make a facial recognition software to identify gay people. We also go over when is too much facial recognition is too much. And at what point does it cross the line. The last thing we did was watch a video on how to make your face unrecognizable.

-Today’s class was a discussion of a few of the Op-Ed articles we will be dealing with in the near future.
-The class was asked to isolate the imperative language in the Op-Ed, “You’re In a Police Line-Up Right Now”, this article also proposing the question what the cost is of facial recognition software in everyday use.
    – The dangers of facial recognition far outweigh the good, after reading some of these articles, in that in today’s society, people are exploring whether or not they actually have, or should have a right to anonymity in public.

  6. Riddle (The Soccer Penalty Kick)
    – 1. The best way to improve your odds of kicking the ball where the goalie isn’t is down the middle. If 57% go one way and $41% go the other that means 2% of goalies stay where they started in the middle.
    – 2. Very few players make this choice because this is where the goalie starts and the idea of kicking right at the thing, you’re supposed to be avoiding in contradictory
    – The shame of kicking down the middle and missing or it being saved is at a much higher rate than the other 2 choices
    Lecture/Discussion Facial Recognition
    – Op-Eds are half opinion half editorial
    – They have a byline which conveys who the author of the op-ed is by
    – Imperative language (Commanding words)
    – We discussed the topic of facial recognition and how it is being used in many ways in everyday life.
    – The big opinion that shows up in the op-eds we looked at discussed how this is an invasion of privacy.
    – There is no doubt that this new technology is controversial with both benefits and negative aspects

-Began class with a riddle about kicking a soccer ball and the probability that the goalie will block your kick.
-We then read NY Times articles about facial recognition and went over a plethora of opinions.
-One author stated that it violates our anonymity in public.
-Mr. Hodges believes that it’s not okay for ICE to use drivers license’s for facial recognition because they did not explain that when taking the picture that the picture can be used against you.
-Facial recognition can be thought of as a violation of our constitutional rights, while others think that it is okay since you choose to be a part of society.
-Facial recognition is now being used to predict the sexual orientation of a person. It uses thousands of photos from a dating site and tries to decipher whether someone is “gay or not.”

    Notes 10/17/19
[] Class started out with a small soccer riddle. We had to figure out the best way to shoot the ball into the net and how to increase the chance of scoring. The chance of the goalie to stop a free kick is roughly 25%, and we found the best way would be to shoot the ball in the center of the net to trick the goalie.
[] We looked at a NYTimes Op-Ed “You’re in a Police Lineup, Right Now,” and discussed the language that was in the article such as the word “violates” and “alarming.”
-We discussed how the article has an opinion that facial recognition is violating our right to anonymity but not everyone in the classroom thought the same. Some thought that if you don’t have anything to hide then facial recognition is not bad.
[] Organizations such as ICE use facial recognition to find undocumented immigrants. Facial recognition has also been used to predict what someone’s sexuality might be by combining faces of the same sex to create this.
[] Other countries such as China use the software to try and predict who is about to commit a crime and find those who have committed a crime.
[] The software has been used to also identify people as “gay face” and “straight face.” This is used to find who is gay and straight, and some countries where being gay is illegal use this software to arrest those who are gay. Even though this software is not proven.
[] I personally think the facial recognition is not something to be too worried about because you are in public anyways, its not like it is coming into a persons house. However some usages of the software seems abused and should be stopped.

We started off class with a soccer riddle, this riddle was on a penalty kick and the best way you believe is to kick a penalty kick and have the best chances in scoring. There were many answers but a lot of them were to kick the ball into the middle because the goalie is rarely ever in the middle and always protecting the side.
We then started to read a New York Times article and pointed out the demands of the author. From there we talked about how the US uses facial recognition to find criminals and that they use it as surveillance to be able to keep places safe
We then moved onto how drivers license’s are used by ICE to find illegal immigrants and how you give that right up when you get a drivers license

  12. Best way to improve your odds of kicking the ball where the goalie isn’t would probably be to angle your body in a completely different way then normal to throw him off and then as your running up to kick the ball you could stutter step possibly causing him to jump before you even kick giving you an open net. I’ve seen it happen plenty of times so if done right its very effective.

Few kickers make the logical decision possibly because of the pressure on them to succeed. They also think their better than the goalie so they kick to their strong side.

    1. What’s the best way to improve your odds of kicking the ball where the goalie is not?
Typically, goalies expect you to kick on your stronger side to benefit your chances, however, they would not usually expect you to go to your weaker side, so kicking to your weaker side could improve your odds.
    2. Why do so few kickers make the most logical choice?
I think that so few kickers make the most logical choice because they may not be thinking too in depth during a game, or they may just think that they are good enough to beat the goalie.

  17. Answer to question one-
The best way to kick the ball where the goalie isn’t is to kick the ball where the goalie is, because the goalie is going to believe that he has to jump into the way of the ball all the time.

    Answer to question two-
So few kickers make this logical choice because they are thinking in the moment. They don’t see that they could just kick at the goalie to see if he moves. It seems like a mean thing to do because you are literally kicking a ball at the goalies face, but I believe that’s what the best option is if you want to win.

    – We look at the loaded language in the article such as, “violates,” “alarming,” and “bias.”
    – We discuss the opinion of the article, that face-recognition technology is violating our right to anonymity.
    – We watch the clip that discusses the amount of bias and generalization facial-recognition has. In some cases, more than one hundred results of the possible suspect is obtained through facial-recognition.
    – ICE is now using facial-recognition to find undocumented immigrants.
    – Facial-recognition has been used to predict a person’s sexuality by combining the appearance of several people with the same sexuality and creating a face. Someone who looks like this supposedly has that same sexuality.
    – China has used this same process on criminals to predict who might commit a crime.
    – In conclusion, facial-recognition is an invasive technology that can violate the constitutional right of citizens.

    – Most kickers don’t do it because they would get called a “moron” for kicking it “right to the goalie.”
    – Facial Recognition: Clara Garvie Op-Ed Video:
    – Clara claimed that facial recognition violates our right to anonymity in public, 4th amendment “unreasonable search,” “right to freedom of speech,” and “due process”
    – Facial recognition is something that should scare us considering every person with a driver’s license can be ran through the software
    – Someone stole socks from Target and 200 people were potential suspects. They convicted one person for the crime. But that person was not told that there was 199 other people who could have been in their place.
    – Is it unfair for illegal immigrants to be tracked down by their Driver’s License through ICE? It is terrible that they can do that, but a driver license is a form of legal identification so it is reasonable that ICE can run that through a database to find illegal immigrants.
    – Is it okay for Microsoft to use a Facebook icon or picture from social media and create a huge database for other companies to use to create their own facial recognition database? IT IS NOT OAKY.
    – Can you identify someone who COULD be a potential criminal by taking the faces of actual criminals and using specific, similar facial structures to then make a face that just LOOKS like a criminal? That’s the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
    – Is it okay if someone could be identified as “gay face” and “straight face” based off of a database that could determine what face has what sexuality? This is absolutely not okay and it could be extremely dangerous in a country where it’s a crime to be anything other than a straight male or female.
    – In all, facial recognition is something that should scare everyone regardless of whether “you have nothing to hide.”

    Riddle: The Soccer Penalty Kick
Started class off with a riddle about a soccer penalty kick and what the best way you believe is to kick a penalty kick and have the best chances in scoring.
    Facial Recognition:
Discussed that we should fear facial recognition. It is a violation of our anonymity in public. There are many cases in which someone is placed on death row from eye witness or facial recognition when they weren’t even involved in the crime.
Vermont is one of the states who allow immigrants to obtain a driver’s license without proof of citizenship. So ICE took it upon themselves to ask Vermont for the photos they take of the unknown immigrants in order to catch them.
Facial Recognition is wrongly used to determine someone’s character.
Two Stanford researchers thought they could create a technology system in deciding someone’s sexual orientation just by screening their facial recognition. They examined dating websites and the people on them by looking at the sexual orientation listed, believing it, and decided to create a list of features that would “reveal” someone’s sexual orientation.
Artificial Intelligence is trained to recognize many things.

    Op-Ed Discussion
We don’t know if it’s dangerous yet so we have no bias. The question is not whether its wrong or right to use facial recognition, it’s a question of who cares. Personally I wouldn’t care and don’t care that my face is in a database. If its being used to catch criminals and the software is accurate than I see no problem. There is no slowing down of the progress of these programs. So while it is nice and interesting to talk about, what can we do?

Class started with a riddle about a soccer penalty kick. Some of the questions posed to the class included: should the soccer player kick the ball to his strong or weak side, how to improve his odds, and why do few kickers make the most logical choice. The riddle got us thinking. The most logical choice was to kick the ball down the middle since the goalie guards the middle 2% of the time.

We talked extensively about an op-ed called, “You’re in a Police Line-ip, Right Now.” We talked about face recognition technology and our constitutional rights of public anonymity and free speech. Mr. Hodges made us think about if it’s okay if the police search our faces and compared it to having a drone follow you everyday. One person in class said that somethings need to be justified to use facial recognition because stealing a pair of socks is not justified.

The next article we discussed was, “ICE Used Facial Recognition to Mine State Driver’s License Databases.” Some people believe it’s fair game for the ICE to dive into the driver’s license database using facial recognition. Mr. Rudolph does not think this is okay because the people who are getting their picture taken were not made aware that their image would be searched.

Overall, we looked at many articles crossing the line of our rights and controversial issues. The articles put a lot of faith into technology. Class was definitely thought provoking and interesting because I was exposed to problems I didn’t know existed.

    – Kickers don’t make the most logical choice because it isn’t the most obvious one. The only way to do that is to kick to their dominant side, but this unfortunately results in a missed shot.

    Facial Recognition
-In class, we discussed how far is too far when it comes to facial recognition.
-Do people have the right of anonymity and privacy or does the police and government have the right to keep tract of our faces in regards to safety?
-Facial recognition is said to violate our some of our constitutional amendments while others say there is no problem with it, for they have nothing to hide.

    2. I think such few kickers make the logical choice because they are trying to fool the goalie and in the moment they think their choice is the better option but it is not the most logical.

To help your odds of kicking the ball where the goalie isn’t is to try and do a hesitation maneuver. This gets the goalies momentum moving in one way which makes it harder for him to change the direction of that momentum.
Kickers try and psych out the goalie by practicing with different legs and different approaches, yet they are not very successful due to overcomplicating it.

Riddle- (1) Straight down the middle.
    (2) It is a huge risk if the goalie predict it correctly. The goalie has three direction: right, left, and the middle.

What’s the best way to improve your odds of kicking the ball where the goalie isn’t?
The best way to improve your odds of kicking the ball where the goalie isn’t is to go for the weak side because statically you are more likely to trick the goalie to going to the other side, which garentees the score.
Why do so few kickers make the most logical choice?
I think so few kickers make the most logical choice because they believe they are good enough to get the ball past the goalie even on their strong side.
